Job Description

Basic Job Purpose/Function:

Oversees the technical design, planning, implementation, performance, security, and recovery procedures for mission critical enterprise operating systems (OS), applications, and infrastructure hardware. Serves as the technical expert for various complex systems. Provides technical recommendations on the security, redesign, and configuration of supported systems. Maintains various hardware and software platforms in an operational state to provide a high level of system uptime.

Essential Duties:

  • Manages day-to-day operations of various infrastructure systems by monitoring performance, configuration, maintenance, and repair.
  • Ensures high availability and acceptable levels of performance on mission critical systems by efficiently remediating issues and properly documenting downtime.
  • Designs and implements infrastructure systems such as Active Directory, LDAP, DNS, DHCP, O365, e-mail, and web servers across the enterprise, ensuring systems operate in a high availability and cost-effective manner. Works with database administrators to design, develop, and update relational databases as they pertain to IT managed applications.
  • Reviews, downloads, and applies OS updates across the Enterprise in a timely manner using tools such as SCCM and WSUS
  • Integrates new servers and software into enterprise infrastructure including cloud-based technologies. Trains technical staff on how to use new software systems.
  • Performs troubleshooting as required. Leads problem solving efforts involving outside vendors, support personnel and organizations for supported systems.
  • Provides OS support on infrastructure servers, and acts as the backup for other infrastructure personnel as needed.
  • Stays current with technological developments in system administration technology, and makes new technology recommendations.
  • Designs and performs server and security audits, system backup procedures, and other recovery processes in accordance with the college’s disaster recovery and business continuity strategies.
  • Performs security audit remediation work as needed to ensure systems are secured to meet or exceed modern best practices.
  • Complies with compatibility and interoperability standards that ensure system accessibility for all users; refers issues to management.
  • Performs cost-benefit and return on investment analyses for proposed systems to aid management in making implementation decisions.
  • Proposes and creates system design models, standard operation procedures, specifications, diagrams, and charts to provide direction to various IT teams.
  • Creates and maintains source code and/or documentation as it relates to system configuration, mapping, processes, and service records.
Additional Duties:
  • May require before and after-hours flexibility and on-call response for emergency situations
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Minimum and Desired Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or related field
  • One (1) or more industry specific technical certifications from Microsoft
  • Three (3) years of experience supporting a PC network environment with comparable systems, including two years performing system administration
  • Experience overseeing the design, development, and implementation of software systems, Active Directory applications, and related products
  • Proficiency with common programming and scripting languages
  • Intermediate level skills in Microsoft Office, including Visio
At the college's discretion, additional qualifying education/experience may substitute for experience/education on a year-for-year basis.Desired Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, or related field
  • Experience working in an enterprise Windows, Linux, and OS X networked environment
  • Microsoft MCSA, MCSE or MCSD certification
  • Familiarity with ITIL service management

Working Conditions:

Work is typically performed while sitting at a computer terminal with occasional physical demands such as working in electrical rooms, crawling under desks, lifting and/or carrying equipment, and using hand tools.

Salary:

Initial salary placement will be based on years of relevant full-time equivalent experience at the sole discretion of the College, per the guidelines in the applicable Handbook or Collective Bargaining Agreement. Hired employees will not have an opportunity to update past experience or appeal initial placement after the time of hire.
