Overview
We are seeking a motivated Junior Java Production Support Engineer to join our dynamic IT team in Sacramento. You will be responsible for monitoring, troubleshooting, and resolving production incidents in our Java-based applications. The ideal candidate blends technical curiosity with strong problem-solving, communication skills, and a customer-focused mindset.
Responsibilities
Monitor production systems and application logs to identify, triage, and resolve incidents in a timely manner.
Provide on-call support as part of an on-call rotation, including after-hours and weekend coverage as needed.
Diagnose root causes of issues in Java-based services and coordinate with development teams to implement fixes.
Perform data validation, regression testing, and impact analysis for production deployments.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams (SRE, Infra, QA, Business Analysts) to ensure high availability and performance.
Maintain and update runbooks, support documentation, and standard operating procedures.
Assist with change management activities, including deployment validation, rollback planning, and change tickets.
Troubleshoot performance issues (e.g., memory leaks, thread contention, slow queries) and propose optimization actions.
Create and maintain monitoring dashboards and alerting rules to improve proactive issue detection.
Ensure security and compliance considerations are followed in production environments.
Escalate and communicate status and resolution details clearly to stakeholders and customers.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent practical experience).
0–2 years of professional experience in Java development or production support.
Fundamental knowledge of Java SE, JVM behavior, and common Java frameworks (e.g., Spring, Hibernate).
Familiarity with RESTful APIs, SQL, and basic database concepts (MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, or similar).
Basic understanding of Linux/Unix commands and shell scripting.
Exposure to incident management, ticketing systems (e.g., Jira, ServiceNow), and ITIL concepts is a plus.
Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities.
Strong problem-solving, analytical thinking, and attention to detail.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
Proactive learner with a willingness to grow into more advanced production support responsibilities.
Preferred Skills (Nice to Have)
Experience with Java application servers (Tomcat, JBoss/WildFly) and basic deployment workflows.
Exposure to monitoring tools (New Relic, Dynatrace, Splunk, Prometheus/Grafana) and log analysis.
Basic scripting skills (Bash, Python) for automation and data manipulation.
Some familiarity with SQL optimization and database performance tuning.
Understanding of cloud environments (AWS, Azure) and CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitLab CI).
